About Southern Airways Express

Southern Airways Express is the commuter airline that ties the regional map of the U.S. together quietly. It was founded in 2013 by Mississippi attorney Stan Little and his partner Keith Sisson. Its headquarters is located in Addison, Texas, and now the airline operates under Surf Air Mobility. The network of Southern Airways operates largely under the Essential Air Service program, which ensures small and medium-sized communities have connections to the country's aviation network. Unlike other airlines that are competitors, Southern Airways does not compete but rather fills in the niches left by larger airlines flying nine-seater Cessna Grand Caravans in destinations that cannot accommodate regional jets.

Explanation of Fare Types: What Is Actually Different?

Compare and Book Cheap Southern Airways Express Today!

The fare structure of Southern Airlines is kept simple intentionally because of the private-like flight experience.

  • Standard Fare - The most common option, the usual way of booking Southern. This includes one nine-seat Cessna Grand Caravan cabin with no choice of seat classes and also two baggage allowances, either checked or carry-on in most cases.
  • Elevate Rewards Fare - The same cabin as for the Standard option, and also the same baggage allowance, only this time your purchase is done via Southern's Elevate loyalty program, which gives you points automatically for every dollar spent.
  • Interline-Connect Fare - Used in case your booking on Southern Airlines includes a connecting flight via Alaska, American, or United Airlines. This means that all the legs are booked together as a single itinerary, and therefore there is no need to check in any bags again between the legs.

Key Insight: The real significance of Comparemost’s service comes into play because Southern Airlines typically operates on routes without any competition. What Comparemost will reveal is whether driving to a nearby major airport to fly the mainline airline will end up being cheaper than going direct with Southern when everything is taken into consideration.

A Network of Bases, Not Hubs

Unlike the legacy carriers who operate at least one hub where all their traffic is concentrated, Southern Airlines operates a network of bases where its routes converge.

  • Memphis - the airline's original base and its oldest operating hub since its 2013 inception. The airline uses it to connect its Mid-South network consisting of smaller airports in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi that do not have any other scheduled flights.
  • Pittsburgh - serves as a southern anchor of the airline's Mid-Atlantic and Pennsylvania small-city route network, which includes DuBois and Bradford airports served under the Essential Air Service program. Pittsburgh's larger airport provides these rural passengers an important link to the national network beyond the reach of regional turboprops.
  • Washington-Dulles - the airline's eastern interline hub, inherited from Baltimore/Washington International in 2021. Washington-Dulles now has the third highest number of Southern's daily connections out of this airport, after the mainline United and Delta Airlines' services.
  • Dallas/Fort Worth and St. Louis - gateways connecting Southern's small-city network to the larger route networks operated by Alaska, American, and United Airlines. These interline connections enable the airline's Caravan passengers to book a one-ticket journey covering hundreds of destinations around the world.
  • Hawaii (Mokulele branded) - the largest inter-island airline in the state when it comes to daily flights between islands; uses the same nine-passenger Caravans as on the mainland. Bought in 2019, it operates under the Southern Airlines brand but retains its own identity.

What comes out is a map covered with tiny dots that would go unseen by many travelers. If you fly from Hot Springs, Arkansas, or Jonesboro, you can take a Southern Caravan into Memphis, and continue on an interline partner to almost any point in the country via one reservation.
