About Avianca Airlines

Avianca is the region’s most historic carrier, the flag airline of Colombia, and operates one of the Western Hemisphere’s largest and most connected networks. Established in 1919, Avianca is one of the world's oldest continually operating airlines. With routes serving Colombia, the U.S., Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and Europe, it's a prime candidate for any trip between North America and Latin America. Thanks to reliable on-time performance, continually upgrading aircraft, and a growing premium offering, Avianca effectively combines the hospitality of Latin America with modern passenger demands.

The Cabin Classes Explained: What Will Work For You?

Book Cheap Avianca Airlines

Avianca's fare categories were simplified in 2024, making them clearer and easier to navigate than before. You will see four distinct fare categories distributed between Economy and Business Class cabins when flying on most Avianca-operated international routes, including all flights to/from the US:

  • Basic (Domestic Only): This entry-level fare is available on a limited number of routes across Colombia, Ecuador, and Guatemala. It includes only one personal carry-on bag and no carry-on baggage or checked bags. This fare is neither refundable nor changeable.
  • Light (International Economy): This is the cheapest possible international fare. This fare now includes one personal item and (effective January 2026) a carry-on bag on all international flights operated by Avianca. There is no checked bag included, and changes and cancellations come with significant penalties, so this fare is best for travelers with very firm plans.
  • Classic (Economy): A well-balanced economy fare with one carry-on bag, one checked bag, and standard seat selection. Change fees may apply depending on the route, making this a good choice for leisure travelers who would like a little bit of flexibility.
  • Flex (Economy): This most flexible economy fare includes a carry-on bag, one checked bag, seat selection, and no or limited penalties for changes or cancellations. This fare is the ideal choice for business travelers or travelers who would like to keep their options open.
  • Business Class - Insignia (Long-Haul): The highest cabin product, branding on all of Avianca's long-haul Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flights. Passengers in Business Class on Avianca Insignia will be able to find lie-flat seats, available in an optimized 1-2-1 cabin configuration with direct aisle access at every seat, a gourmet dining experience, an amenity kit, priority boarding, lounge access, and two checked bags.
  • Business Class - Executive Cabin (Regional): Passengers traveling on shorter intra-Americas routes will have access to Avianca’s Executive cabin. The fare class provides priority boarding, a full main meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner depending on departure time) service, full beverage service, a pre-arrival snack, and a comfort pack with pillow and blanket.

Important: Prices for specific Avianca routes vary dramatically based on how and when they are booked, and one travel aggregator has consistently proven to find better fares than booking directly.

A Network Designed For Where You Really Want to Go

The network that Avianca has built is deliberately oriented towards those markets that represent significant travel patterns between North America, Central America, and South America, focusing instead on building a broad and shallow global network, on the specific markets where it can gain the most strategic advantage.

  • Bogota-El Dorado International Airport: Avianca's main hub is also the gateway for almost all of the airline's international destinations, along with the ability to connect directly to 25 different Colombian cities, as well as numerous international markets across the Americas and Europe.
  • Miami:  This US gateway serves as Avianca's secondary hub and has a significant operation between Miami and both Central America and South America, and Colombia. It's the most convenient connection point in the US for smaller Latin American cities.
  • San Salvador, El Salvador:  This Central American hub gives Avianca a large presence with connections to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, and other Central American cities from various US gateways, including New York, Los Angeles, Washington, and Houston.
  • Lima-Jorge Chávez International Airport: Another key South American secondary hub, it strengthens connections to Peru and provides connections to many other South American destinations.
  • Other important cities for Avianca:  Medellin (MDE), Cali (CLO), and Barranquilla (BAQ) also serve as important regional secondary hubs within Colombia, while San José (SJO) acts as another central hub for Central America.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually, it's better to search via Comparemost. The comparemost compares many fare sources, it brings back the rival airlines to the route and offers lower prices on it than Avianca's website might on the first result screen.

There are always Light, Classic, and Flex in Economy on all US international routes, and in Business on either Insignia or Executive on selected configurations of the aircraft on the route.

Basic fare (domestic only) is non-refundable & non-changeable. Light fare is the restrictive option on International routes with minimal/no refund. Classic fare offers you can make changes for a fee. Flexibility in change and cancellation is highest with Flex fares, with smaller fees and Business fare passengers have great change/refund terms, generally speaking. All passengers also have a 24 hr risk free cancellation policy on tickets bought 7 days before the flight date.

LifeMiles is the loyalty program of Avianca and one of the more prevalent ones in Latin America. It is a partner in the American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou points, and several other major travel programs, making it simple for a US traveler to collect the points.

When traveling from the US to Colombia, 4 to 8 weeks is often best for an economy fare. Flights US-to- Central America seem competitive throughout the year, but the cheapest are in the shoulder seasons, May-June, Sept-Oct. The quickest way to capture these fares, once again, is to set up a fare alert on a comparison website.

Yes, each route on Comparemost websites will list many rivals on that very route, such as American, United, Copa, LATAM, Spirit, and others on overlapping routes.
