About Porter Airlines

Porter Airlines is Canada's third-biggest airline and the most unique airline in Canada, transitioning from regional to national, operating out of Toronto Downtown Billy Bishop City Airport. Formed in 2006, Porter earned its fame with its boutique-style economy flights that included complimentary food and drinks along with a 2x2 seat configuration without any middle seats before it moved to national flights. With the launch of its new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, departing from Toronto Pearson Airport in 2021, Porter changed itself from an urban turboprop carrier to a truly Canadian coast-to-coast carrier with increasing networks in the US and Caribbean.

The Fares Explained: Which One is Right for You?

Compare Fares & Book Cheap Porter Airlines Tickets

There are two major fare families offered by Porter Airlines - PorterClassic and PorterReserve - each including four and two types of fares correspondingly, while every type includes Porter Airlines basic services:

  • PorterClassic Basic (Economy): This is the basic fare option, which is perfect for people whose schedules are fixed and do not require flexibility. It only provides a personal item (a full carry-on is extra), is not changeable or refundable except during the usual 24-hour booking period, and the passenger would have to collect their boarding passes from the counter at the airport and cannot get electronic boarding passes.
  • PorterClassic Standard (Economy): This fare includes a full carry-on and electronic boarding passes but does not provide seat selection, and checked bags are additional.
  • PorterClassic Flexible (Economy): It is the same as PorterClassic Standard plus a free checked bag and more relaxed change and cancellation policies, which makes this fare perfect for people who plan to have checked bags but do not require Porter's Premium PorterReserve experience.
  • PorterClassic Freedom (Economy): This is the most liberal economy class offer, offering two complimentary checked bags along with flexible terms that are changeable and cancellable.
  • PorterReserve Navigate: Porter's response to premium economy, located in the first rows of the Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with around 36 inches of legroom, upgraded food service, expedited boarding, and two free checked bags without having a designated premium economy cabin.
  • PorterReserve Ultimate: This is the premium product and includes all that comes with Navigate in addition to maximum flexibility and priority services – as close as Porter gets to offering business class.

Important note: All fares offered by Porter include complimentary snack service, complimentary alcohol and Wi-Fi on E195-E2 aircraft. Thus, the difference between the fares lies in baggage allowance and flexibility - a comparison tool will show if it is worth upgrading from Basic to Standard or Flexible.

Three Airports in the Metropolitan Toronto Area

Unlike other North American airlines, Porter Airlines' route map uses a unique strategy of operating out of three distinct hub airports within the same metro area, owing to the expansion of the airline into becoming a national network.

  • Toronto-Billy Bishop City Airport (YTZ): Porter's original hub and home of its De Havilland Dash 8-400 fleet of turboprop planes, with its downtown location near the Financial District and accessibility via ferry or foot tunnel from downtown. It serves as a regional hub for flights in Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada and a growing number of US cities offering on-site US CBP preclearance.
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ): The main hub of the airline for its Embraer E195-E2 fleet of jets flying on longer-haul flights to domestic destinations, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean, which are not possible at Billy Bishop Airport.
  • Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW): The secondary hub of the airline with both Porter's turboprop and jets operating out of it, also housing the main maintenance facilities for Embraer jets.
  • Montréal (YUL & MET/YHU): Porter uses two airports in Montréal – Montréal Trudeau International Airport, as well as Montréal Metropolitan (the former Saint-Hubert airport). The latter is helping to expand Porter’s presence in Québec with flights that go throughout Canada.
  • Other major cities for Porter: Hamilton (YHM) acts as a growing leisure destination in Southern Ontario, and Chicago O’Hare, Nashville and Austin are the United States cities that act as growing destinations for Porter beyond Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always - Porter has different fare families, and comparing prices is difficult, because basic fares can be misleading once you start adding baggage costs. A fare comparison tool such as Comparemost will show you other alternatives offered by other carriers, including Air Canada, WestJet, and U.S. airlines on similar routes.

Everyone flying with Porter receives free premium food, beer and wine with proper glassware, no middle seats, and in-flight Wi-Fi when available (E195-E2 aircraft). Passengers with basic tickets only need to pay an additional charge for their carry-ons, seats, and any modifications they wish to make.

All Porter passengers can cancel within 24 hours of purchase for a complete refund. Anything beyond 24 hours of purchase will result in non-refundable and non-modifiable Basic tickets, while changes can be made for an additional charge for Standard and Flexible fares, and the most flexible policies are for the Freedom and PorterReserve fares.

VIPorter is Porter Airline’s loyalty program, and passengers earn points based on the value of each purchase regardless of the fare category used - unlike many airline loyalty programs, which earn points depending on the ticket category. As part of a 2025 agreement, the VIPorter points can also be accumulated and redeemed on Air Transat and Alaska Airlines flights.

Porter has two types of planes: De Havilland Dash 8-400, which is primarily used on smaller regional routes from Billy Bishop Airport, and Embraer E195-E2, which is used on larger routes from Toronto Pearson Airport, Ottawa, and Montréal Airport. Both types have two seats in each row and no middle seat. The PorterReserve premium cabin experience is provided on Embraer only.

Yes - when comparing Porter to other carriers such as Air Canada, WestJet, or US ones, for example, American and Delta, on the routes where they compete, you will see all carriers on one site.
